President-elect Barack Obama will nominate Julius Genachowski, former chief counsel for the Federal Communications Commission, to lead the agency, a Democratic official said.Bloomberg.com: U.S.
Genachowski, an Obama adviser and one of his top fundraisers, worked at Barry Diller’sIAC/InteractiveCorp and helped found Rock Creek Ventures, which provides funding for Web startups. He needs confirmation from the U.S. Senate before he can follow Republican Kevin Martin as chairman of the agency that regulates telephone, cable and broadcast companies.
The FCC’s tasks include helping broadcasters and households cope with February’s switch to digital signals, which could cut service to millions of homes that rely on traditional analog televisions. The agency also may promote high-speed Internet use, which Obama has identified as a key step in boosting the U.S. economy.
